Materials and results vary
Fibre names alone do not determine safe treatment. Dyes, mordants, finishes, interfacings, adhesives, thread, trims, age, damage and previous treatments can change how an item reacts. Follow the maker’s care label and product instructions. Test a proposed treatment on a hidden area, stop if colour, texture or structure changes, and accept that a hidden test cannot guarantee the whole item will react identically.
Valuable, historic or unstable textiles
Do not clean, press, repair, mount or store an antique, culturally significant, museum-quality, heavily deteriorated or financially/sentimentally valuable textile solely from an online article. Consult a qualified textile conservator. Home methods described on Faorms are intended for ordinary, stable items unless an article clearly says otherwise.
Chemicals, heat and tools
Read safety data and manufacturer labels; ventilate the area; protect skin and eyes as directed; keep products, needles, blades, irons and tools away from children and animals; and never mix cleaning chemicals unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Chlorine bleach mixed with acids or ammonia can release dangerous gases. If mould is extensive or a substance is unknown, isolate the item and seek qualified help.
